Ladies and Gentlemen,
We are back.
This fortnight, not only are we returning with the LUG Roundup, but we have a very special interview with Ian Murdock, formerly the ian in debian, now working for Sun with Open Solaris. I talk with Ian about Project Indiana, an ambitious attempt at creating what can only be called "the" Open Solaris distro.
So sit back and enjoy.
Thats right, after a hiatus caused by work, bandwidth and flu, we're back.
We are on the lookout for stories and interviews for both the site and the show so shoot us an email to stories@localfoss.org if you've got something you think we should know about.
I'm also exploring a couple of different ideas to bring the show a more international and inter-community feel, so stay tuned.
Well here we are with Episode 17 of Open Source On The Air, late again and without the live <sigh>.
This fortnight we delve into whats happening in the Open Solaris world. With the upcoming Opensolaris Governing Board elections, I thought now would be a good time to have a chat with three people "In The Know". Joining me were James McPherson, Joshua Clulow and Glynn Foster (who is unfortunately very muffled, apologies, he blames the sheep eating the cables).
Karin has a short round up, and we have an announcement about the Google Summer of Code and Thousand Parsecs, the project we've discussed before with Tim Ansell.
This fortnight we continue with our Round Table format, this time looking at Open Source Graphics. I am joined by Andy Fitzsimons, Janet Hawtin and Pascal Klein in a wide ranging discussion about the growing FOSS Graphics community and the tools that they use.
Karin once again brings us up to date with whats happening in the LUGs around the region as well as touching on the upcoming BarCamp events.
Yet another late episode. Apologies to all our faithful and patient listeners.
This fortnight I managed to snag three FOSS games developers, Tim Ansell from the Thousand Parsec project, Rusty Russell - Kernel Hacker and contributer to the popular Wesnoth project, and Michael Kedzierski from kruel.org a small gaming project trying something a little different.
We sat down and had a good long chat about whats happening in the FOSS gaming world, from why RTS and turn based games seem to be so popular to what seems to be the biggest problem in FOSS game development, attracting the people who make the games look pretty.
As well as that, Karin as always keeps everyone up to date with whats happening around the region.
Well here's our first episode for the year.
Due to the gods of murphy looking unfavourably at us we weren't able to stream out the show last night so here's the first recorded directly for podcast show for Open Source On The Air.
In this episode we have a chat with Greg Kroah-Hartman about the new programme put together by the Linux Foundation to handle Non Disclosure Agreements (a major factor holding back some companies from releasing the specifications to their devices), catch up on all the LCA 2007 goodness and witness the announcing of a new competition from Tim Ansell of the Thousand Parsecs project.
Karin's back with the LUG Roundup, letting everyone know whats happening around Australia and New Zealand in the next two weeks and we have a new competition of our own, so listen out at the end of the LUG Roundup.
Part the second.
We continue the rocking ride that was Open Source On The Air Live at the LCA 2007 Open Day.
This is the first half of our two hour live broadcast from the linux.conf.au 2007 Open Day event.
The event was a first in linux.conf.au history and as such we thought we should be there, so I contacted Mr Audio - Luke Yelavich, and organised a table. We probably had the most unsexy table there however we had a hell of a lot of fun putting it all together.
We had interviews with people from across the world as we grabbed whoever happened to be walking past. The music you hear is all courtesy of the podsafeaudio.com website. Podsafeaudio hosts Creative Commons music as well as allowing you to purchase CD's from the artists and support them in what they do.
We had so much fun we are looking at how we can do it again. We'll be doing it again from linux.conf.au 2008, to be held in Melbourne, and if we can swing it, we'll be popping up at a conference near you.
The countdown to LCA continues apace. This fortnight we're talking to some of the people behind the miniconfs being held in the two days before the miniconf.
We also hear from Pia Waugh of the seven team in an LCA Update and Melissa Draper about what the "Ubuntu Open Week" was all about.
We're back. After a months hiatus thanks to broken boxage we return better than ever.
This episode we're catching up with Kim Weatherall . Kim is a Lecturer In Law and has been heavily involved in the campaign for more sensible Copyright legislation. we have a chat about the recent public hearing held on the proposed copyright laws as well as her general feelings about the whole process.
We also hear from Linux Australia President, Jon Oxer. Jon brings us up to date with whats been happening behind the scenes at LA.
Our LA Update interview this fortnight is with Andrew Cowie. In a wide ranging discussion, we have a look at the challenges being faced by those who would like to combine their FOSS work and money.
We also announce the winner of the Linux Australia People's Choice Community Member Of The Year Award.
Karin rounds out the show with the next fortnights LUG events.
